Some news on the film adaptation of The Treatment (AKA De Behandeling – de film). Fingers crossed it will have the chance to reach a wider audience very soon.
Hans Herbots’s thriller The Treatment is one of six European films which will be screened for US buyers and industry professionals in New York at the end of the month. Newly founded Brussels-based sales agency Be For Films is representing Herbots’s feature internationally.
Launched in 2005 by European Film Promotion (EFP), the New York industry screenings are aimed at introducing new European films to North American buyers. The previews raise awareness of European films and provide sales companies with additional opportunities to secure deals on the US market. Each year, EFP’s members and European sales agents choose the selected films, focusing on pictures with significant festival chances and/or distribution potential.
The private screenings take place at the Tribeca Grand Hotel in New York over a two-day period, with a sales representative of each film in attendance. Pamela Leu will be representing The Treatment for Be For Films, the new sales agency she recently set up in Brussels. Leu learned the trade at Films Distribution, where she worked for over 10 years.
For his latest feature, director Hans Herbots turned to international bestseller ‘The Treatment’ by British crime novelist Mo Hayder. The story sees Flemish star Geert Van Rampelberg (Cordon, Clan, Time of My Life) as Nick Cafmeyer, a good-looking, intelligent and successful police inspector who is haunted by the unsolved disappearance of his younger brother. When a disturbing new case comes to light involving a missing nine-year-old boy, Nick heads a massive search which turns into a relentless manhunt.
In addition to The Treatment, the two-day screening programme also features the creative documentary Radical Face by The Counterfeiters director Stefan Ruzowitsky; Tony Gatlif’s Geronimo; and Bridges of Sarajevo, which has a number of directors, including Jean-Luc Godard. Yalom’s Cure, a biographical documentary directed by Sabine Gisiger, and Jorge Torregrossa’s The Unexpected Life complete the screening list.
Carl Joos adapted the story into a screenplay, with Frank Van den Eeden as DOP. Philippe Ravoet is the editor. Peter Bouckaert of Eyeworks Belgium produced The Treatment, which received support from the Flanders Audiovisual Fund/Film Fund of Flemish Cultural Affairs Minister Joke Schauvliege. The film was also backed by Screen Flanders, the economic support measure for audiovisual works created by Flemish Minister-President Kris Peeters and Flemish Cultural Affairs Minister Joke Schauvliege.
